Using the Big Potty

Warning: If you don't like the word "poop" don't read this post. I use the word no less than 10 times. :) Last night, Brody pooped in the big potty! I had to hold him so that he didn't fall through, but other than that he did the rest.

I really feel like this was a fluke and will not happen again for another 6 months, but I am going to bask in my parenting glory while I can. After all, he is 15 months old!

Here's the real story before you decide my child is a potty prodigy and that I am parent of the year..... My childhood friend, Leah, got her little girl, Perri, to use the potty the other night. You can read about it here. I decided to give it a try since Perri is a few weeks younger than Brody.

Brody is a very scheduled pooper. It happens at the same time every day like clockwork. What can I say? He's a guy. They do that kind of thing. Last night, it was "poop time" so I told Josh we should try to set him on the potty and see if he would go. We took off his pajamas and his diaper and sat him on the potty. I was thinking it would be a good 15 minutes and then he would cry and we could consider ourselves failures. Well, we sat him up there and within a minute he pooped. We clapped and screamed and cheered and high-fived each other for our mad parenting skills. The best part was the poop wasn't smeared on his rear and all it took was one swift wipe and we were done! You can tell from the picture that he wasn't as impressed as we were. He doesn't understand the joy it brought to our hearts.

I think we may try the pooping in the potty for a while. He goes 3 times a day...morning, noon and night, so I think I can at least get a couple of times in the potty. I need some sort of reward like candy or something that he only gets when he goes. Maybe before long he will tell me he needs to go.
I'm not even going to think about getting the boy to pee in the toilet. That's a good 6-8 months down the road but at least we are slowly making are way there.....one poop at a time.

This is the best LOL. I love reading your blog.
My daughter is almost 17 months and we bought her a potty, because sometimes she'll wake up in the mornings and have a dry diaper. So were told to put straight on the potty because apparently she has a full bladder and needs to go. She didn't like it too much. LOL
Good luck with the potty training!

woo hooo good job!!! I went to Target and bought a little seat that fits in the toilet so I don't have to hold Perri and she doesn't feel like she's going to fall in. Don't want to deal with one of those little potties and cleaning it out (eww) so just got the seat since she's already gone on it several times and not minded it. Is it not the funniest thing to see them sitting on the potty? haha. Cracks me up. Good job Brody, keep it up!!

Thats nice that he poops at the same time each day and he wasnt scared. You should buy a little insert that goes on the big potty so that he doesnt fall in and he can sit there like a big boy. Alex never used a little potty and I am glad because they are nasty ha ha!

Can't wait to hear if you tried it today!!! Oh and the word poop is no big deal to any of us moms or dads :)

How cute! We've actually had Ava poop on the potty about 10 times! Woohoo! However, it was b/c she had about a month period where she was extremely constipated so whenever we'd see her struggle, we'd put her on the potty and it was like magic - she went every single time. And of course she had to throw a piece of toilet paper in for good measure afterward! She's 16 months old and she and my husband will be home over Spring Break in March and we are hoping to potty train then. Good luck!

Way to go, Brody! Such a big boy! I really haven't given this much thought for Kaiser, but now that I know it's possible I may think about whisking him away to the potty when he gets that "special" look on his face!

Great job! M & M's work great for potty rewards. As a mom of 4 boys getting them to pee in the toilet is not hard, but getting them to pee "only" in the toilet is the hard part. Ha!

Mary above me, you are not alone. My boy will be THREE in MARCH and so far he will just tell us when he's about to to pee in the bathtub. He's sat on the potty but so far no action.

GO BRODY, YOU DA MAN!!

Hi Jennifer!

Love to read your blog, but don't comment that much. My son is 19 months old and recently started pooping in the potty too. We bought him a small potty after his 1 year check up and slowly introduced it to him. He has only pooped once or twice, but has pee pee'd in the potty now several times. It is trickier with boys because you have to make "it" point downwards. Like today ,we were in public and he told me "diaper" (which usually means he has to go or has gone), and he only pee pee'd, but got it all over his jeans at the same time! lol! All of that to say, that you should try the pee pee thing every once in a while, too. You might be surprised! My little one peed the first time while pooping.

Oh the things that make us mommies proud! Way to go to your little one!

That is SO awesome!!! I'd be high-fiving all OVER the place, too! If he's a predictable pooper, then I'll bet if you work with him with a reward candy, he'll be all over that! Yay for sweet Brody!

That's awesome! I have a great potty training method I have used with my children. And I swear by it. Have NEVER heard of it failing.

http://littlellamas.blogspot.com/2009/08/potty-training-101.html

I trained my 2 odler ones at 2.5. but many (most) books say t0 try around 20-24ms. In your case I think summer is a great time to do it!

I never caught the Poo sign from my kids... that is great you catch it and this will build his self esteem SO much to make the jump!

That's awesome. Meanwhile, Caedmon asked to wear undies again tonight just before dinner...and peed on himself while we were eating.

"My mother had not had a hot meal for herself in 15 years." Totally applies. Ha!

Yay Brody! Just keep setting him on the potty (or get a small potty chair) and he will eventually get it and go on his on. They grow up SO fast.

Girl, you DO have some mad parenting skills!!! Great job to you and Brody!! I think the poop part can sometimes be the hardest part of potty training...so you may be past the biggest hurtle! :)
