21 Days

Beginning this evening, many members of our church will be participating in a 21-day Journey with God through prayer and fasting. It is based on Daniel 10, where Daniel fasted and prayed for 21 days. As individuals, we were encouraged to fast from something for 21 days.

Josh and I have chosen to fast for 21 days from television. We don't watch a ton of TV, but it is always on at our house. I feel like a lot of nights we just lay lifeless on the couch watching TV. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that at all, this is just a personal thing for us and is between us and God. We are choosing to spend our time differently in the evenings for the next 21 days. I really don't even want to think about how many hours a week I spend watching TV, compared to the number of hours I spend a week praying and reading my Bible. I know it would be embarrassing if I added it up.

I think it is going to be a really exciting growing time for us. I think the time in the evenings will be great for Josh and I to spend focusing on God together as a couple. I am excited to see what happens during this month!

I've read several blogs of people at your church who are joining in - everything from TV to internet to diet coke! All hard things to give up. I'm proud of you and Josh and pretty convicted right now about what I could be giving up!

It's a good challenge and I am sure it will be very rewarding. I blogged yesterday about my husband and I giving up cable TV for 6 months. :)

Good for you guys! TV would definitely be something that would be really hard for me to give up - all the more reason why I should try fasting it. I have felt convicted in the past that I need to fast TV but haven't done it recently (I did it once in college). I know God will bless your time.

Hey! My mom is doing that and is giving up sugar. I don't know if I could do sugar or tv! Anyway, I am sorry we didn't make it this morning--we just didn't want to drive 30 minutes through the snow. We live in a little bit higher elevation and it was pretty slick here. We will most definitely be there next Sunday as long as the road is clear. Well, I have got a ton of house cleaning to do! I will be praying for strength for you guys and that God blesses your sacrifice/fasting.

Wow! Good for you! I'll be praying that you get everything you hope for out of it. Is it a Bible Study thing where you meet with everyone once a week or is it just through the Sunday service? Jon and I should fast from something.

I am SO proud of you guys! I have decided to fast from DC, sweets, & FB. I can't seem to stay off FB so I decided that I am done! Looking forward to spending time with God!

I will put ya'll on my prayer list!

Love you!

Happy 2010 Jennifer! I am also fasting from TV...and I'm really excited/anxious/nervous about doing so! Keep me in your prayers. Like you, I don't watch a ton of tv, but I do at night before I go to bed and I'm thinking its going to be hard to lay in the silence. Praying that God really talks to me during those time, praying that I listen!

That is awesome! We don't watch TV and a lot of people think that is weird or that Aaron will be so deprived, but it works for us. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts.

That is wonderful! I have constantly thought of fasting from TV during Lent (I was raised Catholic) and I never have done it. I think it is absolutely awesome that you are doing this. So much of what you said in your post is so true - my goodness, I do not even want to think about how much time I spend with TV when I could be spending it with God! Bless you, Jennifer! :)

We gave up our cable about 6 months ago and haven't looked back. Your time at night together when the kids are in bed will become so much sweeter. I finally started reading again, and love it!
