Puppy Advice

This is my Mawmaw in the picture with us. If you read my blog this summer, you remember that my grandpa passed away very unexpectedly just a few weeks before their 55th wedding anniversary. Since Mawmaw is now alone in her house, she has decided she wants to get a puppy. If you know Mawmaw and you are reading this, you just fell out of your chair. :) I did the same thing when she told me she wanted a dog. Let's just say that my grandma's house is spotless...to a fault. I didn't wear shoes in her house until I was in college. My 47 year old uncle still takes his shoes off when he is in her house. I also don't walk on her carpet, but instead I jump from the hardwoods onto the living room rug because I don't want to mess up her vacuum lines. Y'all think I am kidding, but I'm not.
All that to say that it is a HUGE deal that Mawmaw wants a dog. She needs some company and I think it will be great for her, especially since she will be indoors a lot this winter. Since no one in our family has a dog, we aren't exactly sure what type of dog she should get. I know a lot of y'all have dogs, or know a lot about them, so I thought you could help.

Here are Mawmaw's rules about the dog.....
  • It has to be an inside dog. (This still shocks me)
  • It cannot shed.
  • It needs to be a small enough when it is full grown for her to pick it up and carry it.
  • It can bark but she doesn't want one that yelps all the time.
  • It needs to be a good lap dog.
  • It needs to be a dog that will sleep in her bed at night.
  • It can't be too hyper.
  • It needs to be a dog that is good around babies/children since my uncle has small children and we have Brody.
  • It has to have a good demeanor.
  • It has to have a cute face. (That cracked me up!)

Ok....surely there is a perfect dog for her out there, so let me know what you think. I am pushing for a Bichon, but that's because I just think they are sweet, cute, and great lap dogs, but we are open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I've never commented on your blog before, but hopped over from Kelly's Korner and thought I'd share. My sister has a miniature Yorkie. He weighs less than 5 pounds, rarely barks and is her constant companion. He sleeps in bed with her every night and doesn't shed. Not to mention he has an adorable face!! Best of luck on your search!

hi, jennifer. i love your blog and i just wanted to share my opinion of dogs :) we have a minature shi-tzu. they don't shed and they're great with kids. i know a lady who breeds them so if you're intersted, let me know. i also think malteses are a good breed and probably meet all of her requirements. good luck and be sure to keep us posted on whatever she decides :)

We have a bichon and love, love, love her and she is great with our kids. We must have gotten a super sized one though because she is heavy!! About 20 pounds. I know they are supposed to be smaller so I would make sure to check with the breeder about that. We also got a maltipoo last year for Christmas and she is pretty good. We have had a potty training issue with her, but I think that you can have someone work with them on that too and our doggie door has been a lifesaver on that front! Good luck!!

hey I just found your blog from Kellys Korner! I have 2 dogs a Yorkie and a Yorkie poo...I have pics on my blog. I think your grandmother would love either but a yorkie sounds perfect. Very loyal, small, does not shed. My little one is 4lbs and she has to be with me at all times...shes the best cuddler but love all people.

My grandparents are in their 60s and they have a pekenise (sp??) named Lucy that is basically their CHILD! They treat her like one and she is SO small and well-behaved. Also, my husband is deathly allergic to all dogs (even bichons) and Lucy doesn't shed any hair or dander and is the only dog who hasn't messed with his allergies.

We have 2 small dogs, 1 bichon/poodle and one shitzhu poodle. The one I would recommend is the shitzhu poodle (called a poo-zhu)- from the time she was a puppy, she has been sweet, calm, loving, and doesnt shed. She potty trained quickly (poodles are smart) and has the adorable shitzhu face but without all the nasel problems (shitzhus have nasal problems because of their smashed face/nose. She weights about 13 lbs and is easy to hold. Hope this helps (there is a picture of her, the black one, on the side of my blog if you are curious what they look like).

The girl I work with has a West Highland Terrier (Westie), named Fern. She is the CUTEST thing in the world! Amy brings her to work everyday and she is so good and sweet to all the little kids that come in here! Can't wait to see what she decides on!

Hey,
I have been following your blog since before Brody was born but rarely comment... just enjoy reading but wanted to let you know me and my husband have a 13 year old yorkie and he had been the best dog ever! He is small, does not shead, sleeps between us in bed. HA and always wants to be on our lap... he was my baby before kids and had been and still is a great dog!

I have never commented either, but found you through Kelly's Blog too! I've had 2 WONDERFUL Pekingnese in my lifetime, but they do shed....badly, or atleast mine did..but make great companions! My mom has a bichon & it is the most loyal, quiet lap dog I've ever seen!! A maltese is also a cute, cute, small dog that doesnt shed! Good Luck!

I also have never commented before but I understand the search for the perfect dog.
I have a tiny toy poodle. She weighs 5lbs and is full grown. She sleeps in the bed with me at night because my husband works nights. She is great with kids I have 9 neices and nephews and she loves to play with them. She lets them pick her up and carry her around. She only barks when someone knocks on the door or she hears the doorbell. She doesn't shed at all. She watches tv with me and requires very little exercise. and I think she has the cutest little face. I actually had one growing up and my great grandmother loved him she would keep him when we went out of town.
Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps.
You can check out my blog to see her picture.
PS: You little boy is precious!

Hey Jennifer.. just letting you know how GREAT a tea cup size Chihuahua. We have had Lucy since 2006 and at full size she is roughly 4 to 5lbs. I have Lincoln and now Kenadie and she is a perfect angel with both. Lincoln absolutely LOVES her. I've also heard that Chihuahua's are good for people who might have asthma.. they can sense that an attack might be on the rise. She sleeps in the bed with me and my husband.... and don't worry about her being to small she will get smashed... that has never happened. She only ever barks when someone new comes to the door... and thats it. Oh and she is a lap dog for sure. As I type this, she is sitting in my lap. Oh and she doesn't shed...she has really short hair. Thats a plus in itself! Also she is a inside dog.. she couldn't survive outside.

Lindsey said...

A Maltese! They fit every criteria you listed. I would chose a Maltese over a Bichon because they are smaller. Good luck!

Leah said...

I just recently saw a shorkie or snorkie? Anyhow, Schnauzer/Yorkie mix and ADORABLE and not tiny like a yorkie. I feel like I would break a little yorkie haha. Also Havanese are super cute and don't shed, and actually have hair, not fur. We have a Golden Retriever so that cancels out what she wants haha (shedding/size) Though she still thinks she is a lap dog and is great with Perri. Can't wait to see what she gets!! Oh yeah-- my parents have a Cairn Terrier and I love little Eli. Also Norwich and Norfolk Terriers are little cuties too!!

A minature yorkie. They don't shed. They are awesome, awesome dogs. I am not a dog person, but I would have one of these in a heartbeat. My cousin has one and I have no problem keeping it!

I have a yorkie and he is the best little dog ever! He acts so human and minds so well! I love yorkies and think they are great dogs! Good luck finding the "right" one!

Jennifer, our dog Berkeley is a schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle) and I believe fits all of your Mawmaw's criteria. She doesn't shed, isn't too big or too small, loves to cuddle, and is GREAT with Kaiser. Good luck to her! Can't wait to hear what she ends up with!

I am in college and my room mate wanted a dog and I was very ANTI dog but she got a toy poodle. He is a little hyper but only weighs about 4 lbs and he doesn't shed. He sleeps right up against anyone that will let him and he only barks when he wants to play. He is a very good dog most of the time. He thinks he is human. Good luck with the puppy search.

Kodi said...

I agree on the schnoodle. Yorkies are adorable, but sooo small that if you step on them you can kill them! Schnoodles are small but big enough to be a little sturdier! My parents have two mini-schnauzers. They are great also, and SO sweet!

Jennifer, I've never commented on your blog before either, but I love your blog! My son was born exactly one month after Brody, so it's fun to see the different stages he is in. A Bichon would be a wonderful choice for your grandmother, but I would also recommend another breed that is in the same family as the Bichon and that's the Havanese. We have one, and he's smaller than a typical Bichon - 9 lbs. - but has many of the same great characteristics: non-shedding, good demeanor, great with children, and most importantly, VERY cute faces :-)
Here's a link to a picture of our little guy: http://home.comcast.net/~camelot.kennel/pictures/DSC00585.jpg

No matter what, I am sure your grandmother will love having a doggy companion!

Megan said...

I haven't read the other comments so this might have been suggested but she needs a Yorkie. A Yorkie. A Yorkie. I can't say it enough. My mom used to breed them. If you have any questions about them let me know. A tiny adorable little yorkie would be perfect for your Mamaw!

Amber said...

Jennifer, I have learned I must not be good with dogs! We have had 2 Yorkies and although they are the cutest dogs out there and I loved them dearly, they peed in the house ALL THE TIME. Even when our first one was "trained" she would go outside and pee, then come back inside and pee the rest on the carpet! I know your grandma and I am not sure she would like that! But, then again I do not have a good track record with pets, in general! PS the yorkies went to homes where they are loved dearly and hopefully not peeing on their carpet! :)

Hi Jennifer,
Girly push harder for the Bichon!! I don't actually have one YET but I know someone who does and they are super sweet, don't shed, don't do the yip yip thing, and they are just so stinkin cute, oh and ya can soooo dress them up and they don't care!!

A MALTESE definitely. They are smaller than bishon and MANY yorkies yelp. Maltese is the perfect fit!

We have a Yorkie for our daughter & he is less than 5 lbs and they do not shed. He's very good around kids and sleeps with us. I would highly recommend a Yorkie.

Kristi said...

We did lots of dog research when we were looking for a small lap dog. We have a Maltchon. She is a registered hybrid dog, that is maltese and bichon mix. She is great, weighs about 9 pounds full grown (she is a little overweight too). They are non shedding hypo-allerginic dogs. They are great with kids, and very snuggly lap dogs. Ours hardly ever barks and is in your lap if you sit down. She also sleeps with us in between our pillows. We wanted a yorkie but they are so expensive. The cheapest we could find was around $500. But they too are hypoallerginic shed free dogs. Bichon's do have a tendency to be tempermental with strangers and kids. But always stick to a female, they are a lot more calm and sweeter with people.

I think the perfect dog would be a cocker spaniel. I have a wonderful cocker and she is absolutely precious. She has barked 4 times in the past 6 months that we have had her, she loves cuddling, and I wouldnt say that cocker spaniels are lazy, they are just well mannered and definitely not crazy hyper. And cocker spaniel's faces...are priceless! =) Just thought Id comment. Ive had many dogs in my life and I have to say that Gracie is the best dog that I have had. I think your Mawmaw would fall in love with them. Good Luck on the Dog Hunt! =)

Jenna said...

MALTESE!!! I have one in my lap right now and she meets all Mawmaw's qualifications!

Mary Kate said...

this is so funny...this same thing happened to my grandmother...I would have bet money she would never have a dog...one day she decided she wanted one & tells me all the time that she isn't sure what she did before Max...she got him at a shelter. He is a mutt but is a great dog. we have a westie and fit all your mawmaw's qualifications...well he does shed just a little but not a ton! He is a great dog & wonderful with our babies! she will be so happy with loving dog next to her everyday!

Amy said...

My MawMaw has a yorkie and loves her! She is cute as a button, rides in the front seat of her car (buckled in, of course!), does not shed and to top it all off...she lets MawMaw swaddle her and rock her to sleep like a baby every night...all four paws up in the air...i kid you not! Good luck to your MawMaw...let us know what she decides!

Lori said...

I recommend a Yorkie Poo! Part poodle, part yorkie. I have one and it is the smartest dog I've known. He is kennel trained too. He if full grown and weighs about 6 lbs. Google them, they are the cutest! And....they don't shed! She will absolutely fall in love!

errign said...

If she wants a dog that doesn't shed, have her look for a breed that has hair as opposed to fur. (ex. Bichon, poodles, schnauzers & yorkies)

They shed less :)

htpink428 said...

She should get a maltese. They do not shed and they are small and a good lap dog.

A shitzu would also work well, but sometimes they have breathing problems which can be expensive!

Erin said...

I don't know much about small dogs so I wont be much help with this post but I just think its so cute and I bet a dog will just lift her spirits and give her someone to talk to during the day :) She will be happy but someone might want to help with the potty training !!

Hey Jennifer,
I just thought I would share with you about our little maltese, Chipper. He is such a good boy, and I think a dog like him would be a perfect match for your grandmother. Here is my poem about him from Kelly's Korner "Show Us Your Life - Pets". Take a look if you like.

Hi Jennifer! I always read your blog but have never commented before. I wanted to tell you that a good friend of mine got a chihuahua for her kids a while back and after months of struggling with potty training did some research online and found where they tend to have problems in that area. If she had researched before hand she would have made a different decision. My parents have always had Boston Terriers. They are sweet and so cute!
My grandmas dog was her constant companion after my grandpa passed away. She was a blessing to our whole family!

r- m val said...

terriers are great dogs (we have one and LOVE her) but they shed. bad. yorkies, poodles, bichons, schnauzers (mini's are great), maltese, and any mix with those will work. most yorkies and poodles are a bit hyper and yippie, but the rest are great. the thing to remember with dogs that don't shed is that you have to groom them more. let us know what she decides!

Leslie said...

I have never posted on your blog; however I read it often :) That is the cutest thing I have heard about your grandmother's "criteria" for the perfect dog!! Too funny!

I wanted to brag on my chihuahua named Hercules...all of 7.2 pounds! He is a miniature but weighs a little more than normal :)I would have never in a million years said I would own one but when I got him almost 8 years ago, I have fell in love with him. He doesn't bark other than when people are at door as people say they will and is not a yippy dog. He is wonderful with kids, LOVESSSSS the lap!, sleeps under the covers between your legs most nights :), and will be the first to give kisses when you come home. Just an idea...I will have another one but of course, not wishing him away anytime soon. He is AWESOME and my grandmother even loves to babysit him b/c of how loving he is. My grandfather died last year and that is why my grandmother loves him at her house...GOOD LUCK!!

Aimee said...

So I've never commented before but I've been reading your blog for a little while. I'm a fellow Arkansan! =)

Alot of people have commented about a yorkie and although I love them sometimes they can be a bit yippy. We had one when I was younger and she yipped a lot.

We have a Miniature Schnauzer and I'm telling you she is like my child. They don't shed. Full grown they are not over 10 pounds. Ours is barely 5 pounds and she's almost a year. And she sleeps in bed with us and is a wonderful lap dog. And she has the cutest face. I have pictures of her on my blog if you scroll down. Miniature Schnauzers are very smart and easy to train too which is a big PLUS! We got our sweet little Piper from a couple in Bentonville and she is wonderful with my two young step daughters!

I know how important a decision on a dog is so I just wanted to put my 2 cents in! Love you blog and Brody is such a cutie!

BrittanyA said...

I would definitely recommend a poodle or a poodle mix. They do not shed and are great for people with allergies. They are also incredibly smart and if raised right and around children will make a great pet. Bichon are also great though and that would be my second suggestion. My third suggestion would be a shi-tzu they are great dogs and not yappy. They only downside to all of these dogs and they do require grooming on a regular basis.

i have never commented on your blog before...but we have a shih tzu named mercedes. she is AWESOME!! she does not shed, never ever barks, likes to be snuggled and is excellent around kids (i have 7 nieces and nephews and all of them can chase her, pull on her and get right in her face and she won't do a thing). anyways, that's my 2 cents...good luck :)

Heather said...

We have 2 Yorkies, both a male and female. They are the sweetest, most loving dogs. They sleep with us every night. They are definitely great lapdogs! Our neighbors also have 2 Yorkies, my dad and his wife have 2 Yorkies, my brother and his wife have one, and my mom and her husband also have a Yorkie. So, my vote is Yorkie! :)

Amanda said...

We have Spencer, a 4 year old mini schnauzer and he fits all of her criteria. As I know you've seen on our blog, he is small (weighs about 13-14lbs) and is very loveable and cuddly. He rarely barks (only when someone is at the door or driveway), doesn't shed (he is hypoallergenic), and loves playing with small children. I would HIGHLY recommend a mini schnauzer.

Sarah said...

I've been a "lurker" for awhile from Kelly's blog and had to comment on this one. My husband and I have a bichon (my family had one when I was younger, too) and we LOVE her. She doesn't shed, doesn't bark too much and is the most loyal puppy ever. We don't have children yet but she LOVES all of our friend's children when they come over or when we babysit. Plus, they're small and easy to manage. Hope that helps! (and Brody is too cute!)

Heather said...

Hello! I too found your blog from Kelly's Korner...just thought I'd comment since I am an animal lover! :) I have a bassett hound and even though they are such sweet dogs, they can get large (fat) and they tend to shed alot. My mom has a Cavillar (sp?) King Charles Spaniel and we live her! She is such a sweetheart, she's small, loves to sleep, and best of all...she has a cute face! My mom said she doesn't shed alot either. Soooo, good luck with the search! :) PS. Brody is adorable!

Lindsey said...

She needs a bichon for sure. They are the best for alergies because they do not shed. Very smart, still small, and great little fluff balls. They are so propper looking and always need to look "put together" reminds me of your grandmother...she is ALWAYS put together!!! They do require a little grooming, but I'm sure she wouldn't mind. :)

Jenny Rose said...

I was cracking up reading your post thinking that perhaps we share the same grandmother! lol! Mine is the exact same way! My grandfather passed away shortly after their 50th anniversary and she too wanted a dog. So, we got her a peach colored toy poodle. It is truly the best thing we could have ever done for her. He fits all of your grandmother's criteria. My sister and her husband have 2 westies and they are super cute, loving, cuddly, etc. Yorkies are another great suggestion as has been mentioned. My parents have a miniature pincher/dachsund mix and it is beyond great too. I hope she gets something she loves as much as my grandmother does!

Oh my lands, there are 55 comments already before me, so it looks like you've gotten a lot of good puppy advice hopefully! :o) I am probably the only person on the face of the earth who has never, ever had a dog (or any pet for that matter) so I honestly don't have any advice for y'all. But I did have to comment because Mawmaw's skin is beautiful! And y'all all look like you have the exact same color eyes. Really great picture of all of y'all!

I love your blog! I have a tiny toy poodle and she is precious! My grandparents have a toy poodle and love having her too. Poodles (from a breeder) are hypo-allergenic and don't shed. They are kind, loveable, hypo-allergenic, don't shed, smart, easily trained, and gentle! I highly recommend one!

Would your grandma consider getting an adult dog or does it have to be a puppy? Since she likes her house to be clean and most little dogs are hard to potty train maybe she could get one that's a couple years old that someone cannot keep. Just a thought...
