Good-Bye Bottles

Brody rarely had bottles this whole year. Nursing was just easier and because I was home with him all day, there really was no reason for him to have a bottle. He did take 2 bottles each time he was at Mother's Day Out, so that was 4 bottles a week, plus an occasional one when Josh and I would go out on a date. For the most part, we just didn't use them. I personally don't like cleaning them and because we used Dr. Brown bottles with their 74 parts, I really avoided bottles when possible. But last month, we started giving him 2 bottles during the day of whole milk, while I continued to nurse mornings and nights.

We have always done Babywise with Brody, so I try to stay current on the book that is for his age group. Lately I have been reading On Becoming Pre-Toddler Wise, which is the 3rd Book in the Babywise series. I had read that the first birthday is the appropriate time to move from a bottle to sippy cup. I wanted to check with our doctor too to make sure it was right, but she completely agreed, so as of this week we are saying "Good-Bye Bottles"!

I am so gald we are doing this now. I think that if we continued to let him have a bottle, it would be a disadvantage for him. I don't want him to depend on a bottle to put him to sleep; I want him to be able to go to sleep on his own. He has been using a sippy cup with meals for months and months, so this transition should be fairly easy. Brody will get milk at each meal and water with his snacks. At bedtime he will just get his paci and his silky! :)

Yesterday was our first offical "no-bottle day." He was a ROCK STAR! He drank cold milk (for the first time) at each meal. I didn't think he was going to eat his lunch because he was chugging his sippy cup of milk. He had water with his snacks, which is normal. Then went to sleep within 5 minutes of being put down without a bedtime bottle.

I feel like this should continue to go well since he wasn't too attached to the bottle....but when the paci weaning eventually comes, WE WILL STRUGGLE!! :)

How old were your babies when you weaned them from bottles?

I took the bottle from my daughter on her first birthday. She hated the sippy cup at first but got used to it. She slept with a paci so that was great. I took those away when she was two. My son is another story. He never liked a paci so I got in the habit of putting him down with a bottle. He will be two next month and I will be taking away his bottle. You are definitely on the right track with Brody!

Our daughter was ~15 mos when we stopped giving bottles at bedtime (she used sippy cups the rest of the day). We went on a trip to Guam at that time and I wanted to have the comfort of the bottle for the long flights and dealing with the time change.

Enjoy your reclaimed (un-bottled!) counter & cabinet space :-)

we used the Dr.Brown bottles as well till my son was 12 months old. He never was attached to the bottle so going from bottle to sippy cup was very easy. At 10 months he really winged himself off bottles, so giving him several a day was difficult.I did give him juice/water in a sippy about 9 months old during snacks just so he could get use to them. He loved them and loved chewing on the spout. At 12 months that bottle rack and brush were gone for good. ;o) We tried to wing the paci at 12 months slowly, but didnt work very well. He still has to have his paci espically at nap and bedtime.

Hey Jennifer, I have read your blog for awhile now...I am a friend of Julee's. My daughter Claire is a couple weeks younger than Brody, so I am always looking at things other kids her age are doing, eating, etc. I basically did the same thing you did...as she transitioned to "moo milk" from breastmilk we transitioned from the bottle to the sippy cup. I can't believe our babies are a year old! Before we know it they will to in their terrible twos!

Lauren has been difficult to transition from the bottle to a sippy cup. She totally doesn't get the whole sucking part to get milk to come out of a sippy cup. It's funny :) We took the pacifer away at 8 months and she's been fine with that but I think we're going to have a bottle fight soon....HA!

We did it at a year as well with Alex. She was only on bottles and it was no challenge at all. The Nuk is an entirely different story though. She is 2 and we are still working on it!

I love your blog! Yesterday was so cute!! Oh goodness, the bottle... My kiddos are 2 and 4 and we FINALLY stopped the bottle with them each at 16 months. It was just such a habit and I hated to "upset" them. But once we swtiched it was so easy and I realized that it was just me putting it off. That is basically how it has been with every major transition... Easy for them and hard for me. So, it is great that you are just going for it! Good luck!! And I will keep you in my prayers with the paci!! :)

We registered for the Dr. Browns bottles so I completely understand about all their parts. I have heard they are really good though so glad to hear that you still used them!
I am also glad to hear that you go by the Baby Wise theories, I plan on doing the same thing and was excited to hear that they have more than just their first book! That is the one that you always seem to hear about the most. Glad to hear no bottle day went well with the little guy!

After my little girl's first b-day I weaned her from the bottle! She did great! The paci was super easy for us because we waited until she was 2 and understood what we were doing and let her put them in an envelope and to the mailbox and sent them to the paci fairy! We went and bought her a big girl toy and she only asked about the paci once and I reminded her we sent it to the fairy and she was ok with that! She was a rock star with it!!!!

Jennifer,
I have really enjoyed reading your blog. I am currently 5 mths pregnant and have loved reading about all of Brody's milestones and how you handled them! I definitely plan to run out and get the "baby wise" books! Thanks :)

Way to go- You are such a good momma! We had no problem with the bottle to sippy cup either...the paci on the other hand-OY! C is almost 28 mos old and she still gets it at nap/bedtime...anyone with tips on getting rid of that without major trauma. I don't want to rock the boat too much b/c I am 36 weeks pregnant with a boy...though she is excited about her baby brother, her little world is about to change dramatically!!

LOVE Babywise!!! Connor didn't take too many bottles either, and he went straight to the sippy cup for his whole milk. He did great!!! He had a paci at naptime/bedtime until he was 3 1/2 though. Honestly we tried to get rid of it before then, but it was brutal and he just wasn't ready. We finally did it when he was 3 1/2 and we had a few rough days, but then he was fine!!!

Ahhh we are trying to do this now and it.is.not.going.well. haha. Perri's gotten a bottle of breastmilk at night for a very long time due to my supply being low at night and I thought she definitely wouldn't be attached to it since it's only once a day. I really don't want her to do bottles once she's completely weaned so I've been trying milk in her sippy. Not happening. She drinks a ton of water out of it but milk, she throws a fit. I've tried the past few nights to do her sippy instead of the bottle at night and she goes nuts, throwing herself all over the place, screaming like I'm killing her, thrashing around and clawing at me. This has gone on for over 30 minutes each time until I am tired and give up. Not good I know and usually I stick to my guns with her. I've tried milk in it with her meals instead of water, after she's nursed, but it's still a no-go. Any advice???? That's awesome Brody is transitioning so well!! Also- when did he have the big weight gain?? We went to the dr. today and he is pretty concerned with Perri's weight, as she is now below the 5% and had been pretty steady around the 10-25%. She eats really well so I guess she may just be small??

You are doing everything on track but I was wondering do you give him Juice?? The Bottle breaking was a BATTLE in my house with my 1st I broke her right at 12months she did everything so easy even potty training then 6yrs later my son came along then 14months later my 2nd daughter then 12months later my 3rd daughter so every time it was time to bottle break a new baby would come home which made it next to impossible to break from bottles so I was behind! Brayden was 2 when I broke him then I broke my 2 little girls the same time one was 2 and the other was on time at 12months! Now my next mission is to potty train my 2 youngest!! My son was a nightmare to train......

Go Brody Go!
I actually did it a little early. I started at about 10 1/2 months and she has been totally off since 11 months.
Now the paci, like you, ugh that is going to be a tough one! She is attached to that bad boy! When have you heard is a good age to start with that? Maybe 2??? What do you think?

Lilly is still on the bottle. She does a sippy during the day, but takes a bottle in the morning and at night. I figure that with Reid coming right at her first birthday--I was not rocking the boat. I figure she will wean herself as she has with everything else.

Oh girl....I dread the day we get rid of the paci, too!

I am like you - we didn't use bottles at all either. I am still nursing Eli who turned 1 last month. I am wanting to wean him but he HATES the milk. Any tips? Did Brody just automatically love it or did it take some time?

Thanks!

I needed this post. My daughter does not a bottle at all! I was reading your blog and getting so jealous that you can go on dates. You gave me hope that one day we will be able to go on a date again.
